A group of Cambodian women describes the joys and struggles of being mothers. Three Italian women talk about the difficulties they faced in having children and the path they chose to follow in order to build a family. Lia, a girl from Rome, recounts her daily challenges, both big and small, and reflects on what it means to be a daughter. All these stories, ordinary and extraordinary at the same time, have something in common: surrogacy.

In Alice Tomassini’s film, each of these women – surrogate mothers, intended mothers, and daughters born through this practice – speaks for herself, entrusting her story to a gaze that shows affection, but also anger and pain, towards the complexity and the many facets of these life stories. Tomassini chooses to address a topic that has been extensively discussed without ever truly giving voice to those directly involved in surrogacy: the director gives large space for the protagonists to express themselves, to explain, to feel outraged, in a flow of testimonies that reveals what it means to be a woman, to be a mother, and to be a daughter.

C’è una marcata differenza di tono tra i tre capitoli del film. Quando vengono rappresentate le madri gestanti in Cambogia, costrette dal governo a decidere tra il carcere e tenere i figli che non dovevano essere loro, le vediamo immerse nella natura. Sono riprese in primo piano, sorridenti e sollevate per essere uscite da un incubo che non comprendono pienamente. Il capitolo dedicato alle madri intenzionali italiane, invece, è buio. Le madri non si vedono mai nitidamente, nascoste in un anonimato reso con cura dal punto di vista della fotografia, e profondamente turbate dal dibattito contemporaneo. È un capitolo che riflette lo sguardo carico di ansia di queste donne. Infine Lia, con il suo spirito di lotta passionale e travolgente, viene mostrata nell’ultimo capitolo come la speranza nel cambiamento che tiene legate insieme tutte queste storie. Il finale di Mothers lascia un senso di attesa e un desiderio collettivo di un futuro migliore per queste famiglie. Finally, with her passionate and overwhelming spirit for fight, Lia appears in the last chapter embodying the hope for change that binds all these stories together. The ending of Mothers leaves a sense of expectation and a shared wish for a better future for these families.
