A red door. An elevator. We are inside. That’s how Anna Franceschini, the director of What Time Is Love, shows us into a weird and forsaken place. We are in Nuremberg, and it soon becomes clear that we are in a building where toys are tested with the purpose of getting the suitability for the European Community. The images follow each other as fixed shots: a dancing panda, a saxophonist reindeer, a plastic tractor, an elephant puppet. Una porta rossa. Un ascensore. Noi dentro. È in questo modo che Anna Franceschini, autrice di What Time Is Love, ci fa entrare in un luogo strano e desolato. Siamo a Norimberga in un edificio dove, lo capiamo subito, vengono testati dei giocattoli. Lo scopo: quello di ottenere l’idoneità per entrare nella Comunità europea. Le immagini, per lo più inquadrature fisse, si susseguono: un panda ballerino, una renna sassofonista, una trattore di plastica, un elefante di peluche subiscono quelle che sembrano vere e proprie torture, perché in fin dei conti, anche gli oggetti possono subire violenza.
