Is one hour enough to re-discuss the complex issues of work and technology in the contemporary world? Obviously the answer is no, but Fabrizio Bellomo is capable of taking advantage of this time, even if short, to propose a huge amount of suggestions and questions, just as he normally does with his peculiar art works. It is an experimental film, in which an exorbitant number of images taken directly from real life is represented on the screen: from Facebook scrolls to Power Point presentations to municipal council recordings and television broadcasts. But Film proposes a clear way through the contradictions of progress, leaving us the questions: has technology made us less slaves than work? Does it allow us to be more masters of our tools? Or will we continue to live forever subject to objects and to the power they have to give us sustenance and dignity? What does dignity mean for a man/worker?

Basta un’ora per ridiscutere i complessi temi della tecnologia e del lavoro nel mondo contemporaneo? Certamente no, ma l’artista Fabrizio Bellomo riesce a usare un tempo così limitato per proporre una enorme quantità di suggestioni e domande, proprio come normalmente fa con le sue peculiari opere d’arte. Ci troviamo di fronte a un film sperimentale, in cui entrano nello schermo un numero esorbitante di immagini prese direttamente dalla vita vera, dagli scroll di Facebook alle presentazioni in Power Point fino alle registrazioni di consigli comunali e trasmissioni televisive. Ma Film propone un percorso chiaro attraverso le contraddizioni del progresso, lasciando a noi le domande: la tecnologia ci ha reso meno schiavi del lavoro? Ci permette di essere maggiormente padroni dei nostri strumenti? O continueremo per sempre a vivere sottomessi agli oggetti e al potere che questi hanno di darci sostentamento e dignità? Cosa vuol dire dignità per un uomo/lavoratore?

MASTERCLASS WOMEN IN CINEMA: LE VOCI IN EVOLUZIONE DELLE DONNE NEL CINEMA

Si è svolta sabato 21 novembre la prima Masterclass del 38º Torino Film Festival. L’evento, mediato da Fedra Fateh, vicedirettrice del Festival, ha visto come protagoniste Waad Al-Kateab, giornalista e filmmaker, e Homayra Sellier, fondatrice dell’ONG Innocence in Danger. Le due ospiti, che sono anche parte della giuria del festival (quest’anno tutta al femminile), hanno raccontato come le loro vite si siano intrecciate al mondo cinematografico; in quanto donne, l’incontro con il cinema è risultato fondamentale per dare voce alle loro cause. Waad Al-Kateab ha realizzato il documentario For Sama (co-diretto con Edward Watts), ovvero un’emozionante lettera d’amore rivolta alla figlia per spiegarle la guerra in Siria e le ragioni che l’hanno spinta a restare ad Aleppo fino all’ultimo. Homayra Sellier, invece, ha fondato la sua organizzazione per fornire assistenza di ogni genere alle vittime di abusi sessuali. In entrambi i casi la narrazione cinematografica è stata l’occasione fondamentale per mettere in luce argomenti spesso evitati o posti in secondo piano.

“Noi, popolo degli Stati Uniti, allo scopo di perfezionare ulteriormente la nostra unione, di garantire la giustizia, di assicurare la tranquillità interna, provvedere per la difesa comune, promuovere il benessere generale ed assicurare le benedizioni della libertà a noi stessi ed alla nostra posterità, ordiniamo e stabiliamo questa Costituzione per gli Stati Uniti d’America.” Un preambolo celebre, pensato per essere immortale anche se siamo subito avvertiti che in realtà, nel 2020, ancora molti cercano di comprenderlo.

C’è tuttavia una luce nel lavoro documentario My America di Barbara Cupisti, flebile ma viva.

Even before the images, there is a white light that suggests the coordinates for viewing the film. A light that invades the screen and appears as an eccentric substitute for black, on which the opening credits flow in reverse, from the top to the bottom, suggesting a backward path. This inverse motion is the spirit that moves Casa de antiguidades, the film of the Brazilian director João Paulo Miranda Maria that first looks at the past to talk about the present.

Una luce che invade lo schermo e appare come un eccentrico sostituto del nero, su cui i titoli di testa scorrono al contrario, dall’alto verso il basso, suggerendo un percorso a ritroso. È proprio questo moto inverso lo spirito che muove Casa de antiguidades, del registra brasiliano João Paulo Miranda Maria, un’opera prima che guarda al passato per parlare del presente.

Although her books don’t sell well and business is slow, May has far worse problems to deal with. A creepy, masked man breaks every night into the house where the writer lives with her husband, haunting her and pushing her to the edge. However, nobody seems to take this situation seriously – neither her condescending, insensitive husband nor the police, leaving May alone to her fate.

“Go it alone” (“cavarsela da soli”): questo è il titolo che la giovane scrittrice May Ryer (Bea Grant) sceglie per il suo più recente manuale d’auto-aiuto. I suoi libri non hanno un grande riscontro e gli affari vanno a rilento, ma questo risulta essere l’ultimo dei problemi per May. Un inquietante uomo mascherato irrompe ogni notte nella casa in cui la scrittrice vive con il marito, tormentando la donna fino allo stremo delle forze. Nessuno, però, sembra dare rilevanza a questi avvenimenti, né il marito – accondiscendente e insensibile – né la polizia, abbandonando May al suo destino.

«Just for a moment, let’s dream together». This is the beginning of A Machine To Live In, directed by Yoni Goldstein and Meredith Zielke and shown at the Torino Film Festival “ TFFDOC/Paesaggio” section. The dream in which the film wants us to live is about Brasilia, the Brazilian capital built on a bare plain in a thousand days. Desired by the President Kubitschek, planned and designed by the architects Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer, it was introduced as a utopia that has become reality at its inauguration in 1960. Brasilia is a shimmering example of modernist architecture: It is a city with many shapes, many triangles, lots of white, lots of mirrors and «completely shadowless». Probably this is the reason why the incidence of ultraviolet rays causes many cases of visual impairment. But if we want to live in a dream, we have to see less.

«Per un momento, immaginiamo insieme un sogno», ci viene detto all’inizio di A Machine To Live In, opera prima diretta da Yoni Goldstein e Meredith Zielke e presentata al Torino Film Festival nella sezione TFFDOC/Paesaggio. Il sogno di cui il film vuole farci partecipi è quello di Brasilia, capitale del Brasile costruita in mille giorni dove prima c’era solo una nuda pianura: voluta dal presidente Kubitschek, pianificata e progettata dagli architetti Lúcio Costa e Oscar Niemeyer, fu presentata alla sua inaugurazione nel 1960 come un’utopia divenuta realtà. Scintillante esempio di architettura modernista, Brasilia è una città con molte curve, molti triangoli, molto bianco, molti specchi e «completamente senza ombre». Per questo sembra che la sua configurazione aumenti l’incidenza dei raggi ultravioletti causando molti casi di disabilità visive. Bisogna accettare di vedere meno se si vuole vivere in un sogno. “I long that far away place, where my loved ones come from”: these song lyrics open “Moving on”, first Yoon Dan-bi work, winner of four awards at the Busan International Short Film Festival. These lyrics seem to suggest a return to the roots for the director, back to her starting point.

And this is also what happens to the main characters of Yoon’s film, a brother and a sister who leave the house of their divorced father, a humble street vendor selling knockoff designer shoes. The children move to their grandfather’s, a suffering old man who is often hospitalized.

“Bramo quel luogo lontano, dove vivono i miei cari”: su questi versi di una canzone si apre “Moving On”, opera prima di Yoon Dan-bi, premiata con ben 4 premi all’ultima edizione del festival di Busan. Versi che sembrano indicare un ritorno, per chi li ha scritti, alle proprie origini, al proprio nucleo di partenza.

Ed è proprio questo che accade ai due protagonisti, fratello e sorella, del film di Yoon quando, abbandonata la casa del padre divorziato, un modesto venditore ambulante di imitazioni di scarpe di marca, si trasferiscono nella casa del nonno paterno, un anziano sofferente e spesso costretto al ricovero in ospedale.
