Director Stanley Kwan doesn’t need introduction. First Night Nerves represents for the director, who grew up during the Second New Wave of the Hong Kong cinema, a chance to come back home after a long absence. Even if many sequences have been filmed in a sound stage, the city plays a marginal yet fundamental role. The director sets the scene of the fictitious play Two Sisters in the Hong Kong city hall, for which a demolition proposal has been recently put forward. The director’s choice is a declaration of love for this building, where he spent a lot of time directing plays or taking part in film festivals. Stanley Kwan è un regista che non ha bisogno di presentazioni. Cresciuto nella seconda New Wave del cinema honkonghese, First Night Nerves rappresenta per lui il ritorno alla sua città natale dopo un lungo periodo di assenza. Benché molte sequenze siano girate in un teatro di posa o in interni non meglio specificati, la città riveste un ruolo fondamentale – anche se non pregnante come nelle opere precedenti. Ambientare la messa in scena della fittizia pièce teatrale, Due sorelle, nel city hall di Hong Kong è poi una dichiarazione d’affetto per questo edificio, in cui il regista ha trascorso molto tempo tra direzione di spettacoli e festival di cinema, e di cui in anni recenti è stata proposta la demolizione.
